BROWN EDGES TOWARD HIS EUROPEAN DREAM
Trackspeed1 quarter miler Mark Brown took a huge step toward achieving his main ambition this winter, in gaining a place in the British team competing in the European Indoor Championships, in Turin, next month.
Competing in the UK Championships in Sheffield on Sunday (15th February) he landed his first ever national championship medal, aged 30, with a splendid second place clocking 47.36s over 400m.
Richard Buck took the gold in 46.41, but Mark led the chasing group home for silver , which puts him in pole position for at least a relay spot in Turin.
“I was delighted for Mark,” said coach John Powell, “he came so close to Olympic selection last year, he is a class act and should be given the break he deserves and get a British vest for this.”
It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Trackspeed1 who were missing some of their number due to niggles creeping in – hardly surprising given the freezing conditions inside and out at Crystal Palace of late!
In Sheffield Laura Langowski found that two championships weekends in a row was a little too much having landed the Midland title seven days earlier. She failed to make the final after cruising through her heat into the semi’s.
Phillip Doorgachurn continued his brilliant personal form of late with a 22.01 third place in his 200m heat, but the turns in lane two were a little too much in the semi’s and he was eliminated. Jason Hussain progressed easily into the semi’s but tragically pulled up short of the line with a suspected hamstring cramp.
At the same time, 16-year-old Frederica Foster was in action running against girls up to three years her elder. It turned out to be an impressive show, with half a second slashed off her fastest ever time over the distance indoors or out in the heat – 56.71s in second place.
In the final, she found the going really tough especially after some seriously physical stuff, which strangely eluded the track officials, saw her almost trip over mid-race. Ultimately her fourth place in an age-group above her own was a fine achievement in an event she is still learning.
Training companion Savannah Echel-Thomson had been struggling in training with shin splints for a couple of weeks, and so was always going to find it tough finding the form that saw her walk away with the Southern title last month. She was just edged out of the final in second place in her heat, but with a time not quite fast enough to make the cut into the final 6.
LANGOWSKI LANDS TITLE NUMBER FOURLaura Langowski was celebrating her fourth consecutive Midland Counties 400m title last weekend as she stormed to victory over 400m in Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena.
The 24-year-old from Tamworth came to within seven hundredths of a second of her lifetime best time after clocking 54.36s, bucking the trend of a wretched winter training phase. Apart from the challenges presented by the horrendous British winter this year, family bereavements and illness have blighted Laura’s winter training phase, and to perform as she did was a massive boost. Trackspeed1 coach John Powell said: “I was delighted to hear of Laura’s performance – she hasn’t lost half of what she thinks she has this year, and when it comes to competing, she is running out of hers skin. “I was actually in the Far East when she ran, and got a text at 4am Sunday night telling me off for not sending her a good luck message! So I sent her a little package via Interflora, and she was like a Cheshire Cat at training this week!” Langowski now moves on to Sheffield this weekend (Feb 14/15th) where she runs in the UK Championships and European Championship Trials, which will be a hotly contested event. Channel 4 TV are covering a part of the event on Sunday afternoon, and should feature the women’s 400m finalLANGOWSKI LANDS TITLE NUMBER FOUR
